Women in IT

n Hindu mythology, goddesses Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati are very prominent. Historically, women played a key role even on the front lines of the battle-field (e.g. Kakatiya dynasty and first independence movement). During the freedom struggle, many a women (leaders) fought side by side with men. While Independent India was led by a woman prime minister, and now a woman president, the number of women in engineering and IT has increased starting in 80s. While women constitute about 25-30% in IT/ITES workforce, the number of women in senior leadership positions and women entrepreneurs is not high. Many of us expect our women to do so many things perfectly both at home and office, the work-life balance becomes a challenge. While quality of life is getting better, we should encourage our women to take on leadership positions and create opportunities and nurture the leaders for a better gender-diversity.

At HYSEA , we have been fortunate to have two senior leaders, Uma and Padmaja in the Managing Committee as a start. Many women have taken part in our leadership workshops. HYSEA also plans to create targeted programs for women associates in the IT/ITES industry.

Past two months for HYSEA have been eventful with major activities in the area of CSR, Student design competition, HYSEA Best Software Product/Innovation competition, 5th Technology Day and 16th Annual Awards day celebration. We are enthused by the no: of companies that participated in the Blood Donation Camps organized as part of the HYSEA CSR Forum during the month of January. It was equally heartening to see increased participation in Student Design competition by students of Engineering Colleges of AP and the numbers of entries for HYSEA Best Software Product/Innovation awards.

Let me also take this opportunity to congratulate all the participants and winners of various HYSEA awards for 2007.

Please feel free to send us your inputs.

Yours,

Dr. Anil K. Jampala
President
